Ramendra Sundar Trivedi Vigyan Mandap

In 1974, we hosted our first science exhibition, named ‘Ramendra Sundar Trivedi Vigyan Mandap,’ at the month-long Bengal Culture Conference held at the Maidan. This initiative sparked the formation of new science clubs across West Bengal, organizing science exhibitions, and promoting science popularization efforts. Sky observation events using telescopes were also arranged at various locations starting from 1974.

Shishubhuvan Sengegaon Vidyalaya

In 1977, we established our first ‘Shishubhuvan Sengegaon Vidyalaya’ at Gobardanga as a private initiative for child education. Later, a tribal children’s school, ‘Shishubhuvan Adivasi Vidyalaya,’ was constructed, which provided training in knitting and tailoring to help students become self-reliant.

Beekeeping Training Program

G.R.I.’s beekeeping training program, launched in 1976, offers hands-on instruction in modern beekeeping techniques. Led by expert trainers, the program educates participants on hive management, honey production, and sustainable practices, contributing to West Bengal’s leadership in beekeeping and honey production. Participants also learn about the importance of pollination in agriculture and the role of bees in maintaining biodiversity. Students of the program have gone on to establish successful beekeeping businesses, helping to stimulate economic growth in rural communities. We organised State level Conference in the year 1980, 1982. & 1984 which enhanced to form the west Bengal Bee keepers’ Association in the year 1987, we are now deeply involved in the above project till now.

All India Science Club Conference

In 1979, the ‘All India Science Club Conference’ was held at Gobardanga under the institute’s initiative, inaugurated by the late Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, Scientist Professor Sushil Kumar Mukherjee. This event marked a significant milestone in fostering collaboration and innovation among science clubs nationwide.

Science Fairs and Exhibitions

G.R.I.’s science exhibition workshops provide interactive platforms for students and professionals to showcase scientific projects and innovations. Our workshops offer hands-on experience in creating exhibits, conducting experiments, and presenting findings, fostering enthusiasm for science and facilitating knowledge exchange among participants. Participants also have the opportunity to receive feedback from industry experts and educators, helping them improve their projects and develop their scientific skills further. Moreover, the workshops often feature keynote speakers who share insights and experiences in the field, inspiring attendees to pursue their passion for science.

Bengalee Science Writers Conference

In 1982, the first ‘Bengalee Science Writers Conference’ was held at the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM), Kolkata, under the initiative of the institution. This conference brought together science writers to discuss and promote scientific literature in the Bengali language.

Publications and Media

Since 1970, G.R.I. has been involved in publishing a monthly magazine named ‘Gobardanga’, which later evolved into ‘Kushdah Barta’ which is now Completed 32 years journey. We also published various books and regional history volumes, contributing to literature and scientific knowledge.

Jan Vigyan Jatha

During the ‘Jan Vigyan Jatha’ held across India in 1991-92, we played a special role, with the present Chief Advisor, Dipakkumar Dan, serving as the Coordinating Secretary (Executive Secretary) for West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Tripura, and the Andaman-Nicobar Islands. This initiative aimed to promote scientific awareness and literacy.

Agriculture-Florism-Science Fair

From 1988 to 2003, we organized an Agriculture-Florism-Science Fair every year at Gobardanga for about 15 years. Due to financial constraints, the fair is currently closed, although occasional science exhibitions are organized to promote scientific learning and innovation.

National Children’s Science Congress

The National Children’s Science Congress (NC-STC, Govt. of India) began in 1992-93 and has been coordinated in North 24 Parganas district by various dedicated individuals including Sunil Biswas, Swapan Chakraborty, and currently Nilkamal Mondal. This initiative provides a platform for young scientists to present their innovative ideas and projects, fostering a spirit of scientific inquiry and research among children. The G.R.I. has actively participated in and supported the Congress, promoting scientific temperament and creativity among the youth. Through our workshops, exhibitions, and interactive sessions, the Congress aims to nurture scientific talent and encourage students to explore and solve real-world problems.

Educational Initiatives

Schools and Libraries

In addition to the science club, G.R.I. established the ‘Shishu Bhuban Renaissance Nursery’ in 1977 which was upgraded to primary school in the year 1988 and various educational programs, including music and dance schools. we also started a library named “Probodh Chandra Mitra Smriti Pathagar and museum in their permanent building named ‘Mani Dasgupta Bhavan’.

Summer Science Camp

G.R.I.’s Summer Science Camp, established in 1988-89, provides an immersive learning experience for 40-50 students annually. The camp includes interactive workshops, experiments, and field trips, fostering curiosity and a passion for science among young participants. This initiative aims to inspire future scientists and promote scientific literacy in the community. Participants also have the opportunity to work closely with experienced scientists and educators, gaining valuable mentorship and guidance. Hands-on activities and real-world applications of scientific concepts allow students to develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the natural world.

Telescope Making Workshop

The Gobardanga Renaissance Institute (G.R.I.) has been instrumental in fostering scientific curiosity and education through various workshops, one of the most notable being the Telescope Making Workshop. This hands-on workshop empowers participants, particularly students and science enthusiasts, to build their telescopes from scratch. Guided by experienced instructors and equipped with the necessary materials, participants learn the intricacies of optical science and the practical skills required to assemble a functioning telescope. Our workshop not only enhances your understanding of astronomy but also ignites a passion for exploring the cosmos, thereby contributing to G.R.I.’s mission of popularizing science and encouraging innovation among the youth.

Aeromodelling Workshop

In 1999, a state-level ‘Aeromodelling Workshop’ was held, providing participants with the opportunity to learn about the principles of aerodynamics and build their model aircraft. This workshop aimed to inspire interest in aeronautical engineering and aviation among students and hobbyists. Now our institution is well-equipped to organise the above workshop in the school or anywhere.

Food Distribution

The Gobardanga Renaissance Institute (G.R.I.) has been actively involved in food distribution as part of its community welfare initiatives. Starting from the mid-1970s, the institute introduced the concept of mid-day meals in the tribal village of Sarkarpara, providing nutritious meals such as rice, dal, curry, and egg broth to combat malnutrition and support education among impoverished children. This initiative was a precursor to the official mid-day meal programs introduced later. By 1990-91, with the help of grants and donations, G.R.I. established facilities to cook and distribute these meals effectively. The institute’s commitment to food distribution reflects its broader mission of addressing poverty and promoting holistic community development.

Clothes Distribution
